Who is the first person buried in the Dutch Hollow Hanger Cemetery?
The oldest date-inscribed headstone found to-date is that of M. K. B. 1798. That is the complete inscription. This grave is strongly believed to be that of Maria Kaufelt Bright. Maria was born June 17, 1734 in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany and came to America in 1746, arriving in Philadelphia October 25th aboard the Ship Neptune. The Focused Research Section has a reseasrch file for Maria and more information can be found there. A photograph of her headstone is in the cemetery records section. Having said all of that, burials dating back to as early as at least 1782 are suspected. Approximately 25% of the graveyard has yet to be cleared and it is there that the older graves are suspected of being located. Few if any may be marked with an inscribed stone however. Further research on the graveyard itself is pending, using ground penetrating radar to locate unknown gravesites and just as importantly, headstones, marked and unmarked, that have been covered by centuries of sedimentation.
